In mid-May, Fast Company broke the news about Silicon Valley’s diversity, or lack thereof. Reporter, Max Chafin cited the current problems at GitHub and the stark reality that only 16 of the 68 companies in Y Combinator's most recent class have at least one female founder. With an arched brow raised in judgment, the article pointed out that GitHub recently earned press as "a great place for women to work."
The story gained steam toward the end of May when Gail Sullivan at the Washington Post wrote regarding Google’s recent release of its own data and the revelation that thirty percent of Google’s 46,170 employees worldwide are women. The percentage is lower for the company’s tech sector, where just 17 percent are women. Additionally, 21 percent of leadership positions in the company are held by women.
This is a continuing story, and while there is work to be done on the diversity front, the fact remains that organizations that promote diversity still have a firm place in our corporate world. These organizations serve as a wonderful place to network but also gain meaningful information about the recruitment, promotion and practices in the workplace that attract and sustain a diverse workforce. While news stories abound about the lack of diversity among tech companies, there is an untold story about the diversity within the firms that counsel and consult with top Silicon Valley employers about their issues, concerns, and yes—diversity and its communication.
